“From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1032)
The graces that come with having a Mass offered for a special intention are immeasurable… “the best spiritual help that we can give to their souls”… especially for the dead, since they can no longer pray for themselves. (Pope Francis)
The Sanctuary Candle burns to remind us that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist in the tabernacle, offering hope and presence in the darkness, inviting prayer and adoration.
Mass, candle, or flower intentions may be offered for different reasons: the deceased, the living, the souls in purgatory, healing, thanksgiving, or in honor of a Sacrament, birthday, or anniversary.
For such intentions, a small free-will donation or stipend is traditionally given to support the church and its priests.
